As the school year winds down here in the southern hemisphere, I find myself reflecting on my own journey over the past few weeks. After undergoing knee surgery, I’ve been deep in the process of rehabilitation—a journey that’s taught me some powerful lessons. One stands out above all: perseverance is key to learning.
Rehabilitation, much like learning at school, isn’t a straight path. It’s filled with moments of progress and setbacks, and there are times when it feels frustratingly slow. But what I’ve learned is that perseverance—sticking with it even when it’s tough—is essential. Just as I can’t expect my knee to recover overnight, students can’t expect to master a subject or skill instantly. It takes consistent effort, time, and a willingness to try again if at first you don’t succeed.
Reflecting on the Year That Was
As the year comes to a close, this is the perfect time for students to reflect on their own journey. Think about what worked well for you this year and what didn’t. Were there moments where perseverance paid off? Or times when you might have given up too soon?
Consider your recent exams, how you approached assignments, or even how you managed your time and organisation. What strategies were effective? Where could you improve? Take a few moments to write these reflections down—your future self will thank you!
When the new school year begins in 2025, you can revisit these notes and use them as a guide to set intentions for how you’ll approach challenges and opportunities.
Don’t Forget Holiday Homework
If you’ve been given holiday homework, it’s important to plan ahead. Ideally, set aside time early in the break to get it done, rather than leaving it to the last minute. Completing it sooner rather than later not only ensures you avoid the stress of rushing but also gives you the chance to properly go over your work closer to the start of the school year. Reviewing your homework just before school resumes can be a great way to refresh your memory and start the year feeling prepared. Remember, doing it the night before school starts is never a good idea!
Embrace the Summer Break
As I continue my own recovery, I’ll keep focusing on perseverance and growth—and I encourage you to do the same. Whatever your goals are for the new year, know that progress comes with patience and persistence.
Here’s to a wonderful summer and a bright start to 2025!
PS thanks for all your well wishes too!
